Create a Donor-Advised Fund to Honor a Loved One
Frank and Lynda Hester established the Hester Family Legacy Fund in 2011 to honor Naomi Collins Hester, whose lifelong service and volunteer activities helped improved quality of life for many Dare County residents.
Naomi was an early member of the Freedmen's Colony Association. She served as Coordinator for Student Services for Dare County Department of Education, and taught at Manteo High School and Head Start. When she retired in 1998, she had been involved in numerous charitable activities for most of her life. She co-founded Monday Night Alive, was a social worker for older adults in Dare County, taught Sunday School, and was a member of Deaconess Board at Haven Creek Missionary Baptist Church. She volunteered with dozens of organizations, too, and continued to deliver meals to homes of shut-ins and sing in the Echoes of Heritage until very late in life.
Her large family, inspired by her work, invited friends to make monetary gifts to the new fund, created to honor her lifetime of work and to celebrate her 70th birthday. Family members make recommendations for distributions from the endowed, donor-advised fund to organizations that assist at-risk older adults, especially those with Alzheimer's, at-risk veterans, and at-risk children.
"In essence, it was a way to keep her memory alive and also to continue to reach out and help people without looking for anything in return," her son Frank said. "She did it truly from her heart to help others. If she could help you, she would…and I think we're all better served with a mindset like that, that if we can help, we should help."
