Barbara Barnes Sherman Memorial Scholarship Fund Honors a Passionate Educator

(2021) Barbara Barnes Sherman was a kind, giving, loving, and singular woman who touched the lives of countless Outer Banks families, as a mother, grandmother, neighbor, and friend; and through her church activities and more than two decades as an elementary school teacher here. An automobile accident tragically took Barbara too soon, at the age of 71.

Barbara married her high school sweetheart, Ricky; they enjoyed 48 years of marriage and a love that most only dream of. Together, they raised two children and had an extended family that included relatives, friends, and people they helped along the way. The family dinner table often held additional friends and other family, as their capacity for graciousness and generosity seemingly knew no bounds.

As an educator, it was said that Barbara's gentle kindness and tender heart embraced every child and family. Passionate about children's education, she lived in the belief that every day was an opportunity to bring out the best in her students and in herself.
